Hello!

I’m Ana Lucía Del Solar, biologist and scientific illustrator.

I have a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Biology, with specialization in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have worked in academia and in the private sector as a researcher, while also working as a teacher in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for undergraduate students.

Currently, I’m a scientific illustrator and communicator.

How did I become a scientific illustrator?

I have always thought that the best way to explain and communicate complex scientific topics is through graphics and illustrations. These allow concepts to be clearly simplified. They also offer a versatile medium that can be adapted to a broader audience, from photo realistic images for study books to comics, cartoons, animations, video games, etc.

During my career as a biologist, I realized that I loved teaching and used schemes and illustrations designed by me to communicate information in a didactic and simple way. I noticed the usefulness of graphics for this purpose, and I really enjoyed making them, but at the time I didn’t know that scientific illustration as a profession existed.

Over the years I discovered that one could make a career out of that. So, with that in mind, I started to learn illustration, graphic design and animation on my own, and decided to fully dedicate myself to scientific illustration.

Why choose me?

My main goal is helping you communicate science in a graphic and simple way.

My background and experience allow me to evaluate, synthesize and communicate science in an effective manner. Because of this, I’m able to research and understand a topic fully, something I consider fundamental for communicating science.

More about me

Biology is diverse and full of interesting topics. My main scientific interests, and the ones in which I have research experience, are the regulation of human metabolism and development of metabolic diseases, and the influence of circadian rhythms.

Since a few years ago, I work doing scientific communication in nutrition and metabolism in Spanish with my husband for Nutmol (www.nutmol.com). Besides contributing to the content, I’m in charge of the design and graphics for our web page, podcast and social media.

Since I like to teach, I also have a YouTube channel where I make tutorials for different graphic design programs. The channel is in Spanish because I noticed a lack of this type of content in my language and I want to help ensure that this is not a limitation to learning.
